SURE 2016 - 2nd Congress of the Society for Urban Ecology
Topics/Call fo Papers
In 2013 the First Congress of the Society for Urban Ecology (SURE) was held in Berlin. More than 225 scientists and practitioners from 30 countries participated in the congress, 190 lectures with scientific and practice-oriented topics on urban ecology were presented. The success of the Congress as well as persistent demand for an independent platform for researchers in the field of urban ecology requires a continuum of such events.
Why having the Congress in Shanghai? China has become the world’s largest urbanized nation by population, and urbanization is still rapidly going on. Many challenges for urban ecology occur as a result of highly dynamic urban development, even more so in the context of many other global environmental changes. As the largest urbanized city by many measures in China, Shanghai both benefited tremendously as a result of the rapid urbanization, it also faces numerous challenges in urban ecology. As a city to host the 2nd Congress of the Society for Urban Ecology Shanghai has a lot to offer to the participants.
Here are some ideas of possible symposia topics and possible organizers. Please feel invited to apply for one
of the listed, but not limited, topics as symposium. Any other suggestions are welcome!
1. The theory of urban ecology
2. The challenges of rapid urban development for urban ecology
3. Eco-cities and the way to build them by ecological planning, design and management
4. Socio-economical complexity of urban areas
5. Urban green and blue infrastructure and urban environmental quality
6. Ecosystem services and nature-based solutions in urban areas
7. Urban sustainability and urban resilience - environmental justice in the course of global urbanization
and environmental change
8. Methods and tools in investigating urban ecosystems ? new approaches
9. Urban biodiversity versus functional design in cities?
10. Urban morphology: from megacity to metacity
11. Remote sensing of urban environment
12. Urban metabolism
13. Effects and mitigation of climate change in the urban envrionment
14. Sustainable management for urban - rural interactions
15. Future of urban ecology - Young Researchers/Student Symposium
