The proliferation of high-speed computing and advanced networking technologies has leveraged the uptake of immersive and interactive 3D multimedia services and applications. Fixed and mobile acquisition and capturing technologies for multi-view video have shown great advancements over the past years. Different 3D representation schemes have emerged, including point clouds, meshes, plenoptic (light-field) as well as the conventional video-plus depth approach. Advanced compression schemes based on the latest standards can exploit the cross-domain redundancies to provide superior rate-distortion performance and scalability, enabling both the high-end entertainment systems as well as mobile 3D environments. Quality of Experience (QoE) aware and adaptive processing mechanisms, which are bespoke tailored to the characteristics of used 3D media representation, are primarily essential for the success of such applications. Cloud systems can provide the necessary assistance in terms of computationintensive functions such as virtual view rendering especially for large groups of mobile and portable device users. Besides, various delivery methods, including CDN and P2P-based schemes, and a broad range of networking environments, including the fixed broadband, wireless and mobile IP networks (4G/LTE, 5G), as well as hybrid and converged systems, should all be anticipated to facilitate the effective delivery of such 3D multimedia content.
With the aforementioned motivations, this special session will report on the results of recent research activities that cover a variety of related topics including, but not limited to:
Novel processing and delivery schemes for rich 3D multimedia applications;
Interactive 3D multimedia service architectures;
Hybrid 3D multimedia distribution technologies;
Perception-driven and QoE-aware methods for 3D multimedia services;
Cloud-assisted processing and networking architectures for 3D multimedia services;
Adaptive processing, coding and delivery for novel 3D media formats;
Mobile multi-view processing and delivery technologies;
Novel QoE models for emerging 3D multimedia formats.
