Multimedia analysis for security applications faces a number of unique challenges including: the volume and availability of constantly produced video data; query responsiveness; impact of false alarms; diversity of standards and proprietary implementations; and the security, privacy and ethical considerations inherent in this field. However, conservative estimates in 2011 put the number of CCTV cameras in the UK alone at 1.85 million so this is potentially a very rich source of critical information. Analysis, indexing, integrating and improving access to the video produced by surveillance cameras from different systems, companies, jurisdictions and countries is a major goal and a number of EU research projects are tackling various aspects of these problems. This special session will include contributions from the most recent projects investigating and developing solutions to address the deluge of available multimedia in security applications.
