Abdulmotaleb El Saddik
Abdulmotaleb El Saddik, a University Research Chair and Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and
Computer Science at the University of Ottawa, is an internationally-recognized scholar who has made strong
contributions to the knowledge and understanding of multimedia computing, communications and applications,
particularly in the digitization, communication and security of the sense of touch, or haptics, which is a new medium
that is significantly changing the way in which human-to-human and human-computer interactions are performed.
He is the director of the Multimedia Communications Research Laboratory (MCRLab) and act as Associate editor of
several journals and transactions. Dr. El Saddik has been serving on several technical program committees of
numerous IEEE and ACM events. He has authored and co-authored four books and more than 400 publications. He
has supervised more than 100 researchers. He is the first Canadian in Computer Science & Engineering to receive
the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Award from the German Humboldt Foundation. Among his honours are the 2011
Cátedra de Excelencia from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Spain and the 2010 IEEE Instrumentation and
Measurement Society Technical Award for his outstanding contributions to multimedia computing. He received the
Faculty of Engineering’s George S. Glinski Award for Excellence in Research (2012) and the IEEE Ottawa
Educator Award (2012). He is ACM Distinguished Scientist, Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, Fellow
of the Canadian Academy of Engineers and Fellow of IEEE.
Vladan Velisavljevic
Vladan Velisavljevic received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. (Magister) degree from the University of Belgrade, Serbia, in
1998 and 2000, respectively, and the Master and Ph.D. degree from EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland, in 2001 and
2005. From 1999 to 2000, he was a member of academic staff at the University of Belgrade. In 2000, he joined the
Audiovisual Communications Laboratory (LCAV) at EPFL as teaching and research assistant, where he was
working on his Ph.D. degree in the field of image processing. In 2003, he was a visiting student at Imperial College
London. From 2006 to 2011, Dr. Velisavljevic was a Senior Research Scientist at Deutsche Telekom Laboratories,
Berlin, Germany. Since October 2011, he is Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) at Bedfordshire University,
Luton, UK. He has co-authored around 50 research papers published in peer-reviewed journals and conference
proceedings and he has been awarded or filed 4 patents in the area of image and video processing. He co-organized a
special session at ICIP-2011 on compression of high-dimensional media data for interactive navigation and he
serves as Associate Editor / Board Member for IEEE MMTC R-Letters since March 2011. He also chaired the MCC
symposium at ICNC-2013 and ARSR/SWICOM workshops in 2012 and 2013. Since March 2013 Dr. Velisavljevic
is Deputy Head of the Centre for Wireless Research at the University of Bedfordshire and he is a Senior Member of
IEEE. His research interests include image, video and multiview video compression and processing, wavelet theory,
multi-resolution signal processing and distributed image/video processing.
