HotMM 2012 - Workshop on Hot Topics in Mobile Multimedia
Topics/Call fo Papers
The workshop on Hot Topics in Mobile Multimedia will be held in Melbourne, Australia as part of the IEEE International Conference on Multimedia & Expo (ICME) 2012 from 9th - 13th July, 2012. The goal of the workshop is to provide a forum for quick dissemniation of high-quality and original, early-stage research in the area of multimedia applications on mobile devices and mobile networks.
Call for papers
Mobile networks and devices are seeing a rapid increase in popularity and usage. Multimedia applications are contributing significantly to this growth, with applications such as video-on-demand, music streaming, VoIP, and video conferencing seeing widespread and increasing usage.
Multimedia applications are demanding and require novel research and innovative ideas in order to work well on challenging mobile environments. Mobile networks utilizing 3G, 4G, WiFi, and Bluetooth technologies attempt to provide ubiquitous network connectivity, but currently don't provide the bandwidth needed for rich multimedia applications nor the latency needed for real-time applications. Thus one area of research aims to improve multimedia applications given the network constraints of mobile networks. Mobile devices provide ultra-portability and allow people to work and connect anywhere, anytime. However, limited display size, CPU speed, memory, and power constraints require intelligent and low power implementations of multimedia applications. Therefore the second area of research aims to improve multimedia performance on mobile and other small form-factor devices. Although mobile networks and devices place many constraints that multimedia applications need to work around, at the same time, they also provide a rich area for novel multimedia applications which take advantage of the ubiquitous and anytime/anywhere nature of these devices and networks.
In this workshop, we solicit high quality papers on topics related to either 1) new multimedia scenarios taking advantage of mobile devices and networks, or 2) in improving the multimedia experience of existing scenarios on mobile devices and networks. This workshop aims to provide a forum for discussing early-stage, disruptive research which can have far reaching impact.
Research in all areas of mobile multimedia is solicited and demos of prototype multimedia applications on mobile are also encouraged. Potential topics of interest may include:
Improving multimedia communications and multimedia delivery across mobile networks.
Improving multimedia applications on small form-factor devices.
Improving energy efficiency of multimedia applications.
Multimedia content generation from mobile devices.
Measurement and analysis of multimedia performance.
Novel multimedia applications taking advantage of mobile devices.
