We invite you to join SISSI 2011 - The 2nd international workshop on
Social Interaction in Spatially Separated Environments, held in
conjunction with UbiComp 2011 in Beijing, China, on September 18, 2011.

Workshop topic and goals

Social relationships between co-workers, family members or friends play
an important role in our everyday lives. They are responsible for our
well-being, for a productive working atmosphere and for feeling part of
our various communities.

While working and living co-located with our peers, establishing and
maintaining such relationships is a natural process. Nevertheless, our
lives have changed quite drastically in the past decades. Today, social
groups are often constantly or temporarily spatially separated from each
other. Coworkers are often working in different physical location, teams
are distributed over multiple branch offices, situated in different cities,
countries or continents. Relatives and friends are often spread all over
the world. Furthermore, there are clearly good environmental reasons to
find appropriate techniques and guidelines to support social interaction
over a distance. Thus, it becomes more and more important to develop
methods to stay in touch with our non co-located peers.

The goal of this workshop is to investigate ubiquitous technologies,
techniques and challenges related to the idea of bringing separated
social groups closer together by facilitating social interactions between
them. We also aim to develop new ideas on how we can exploit existing
technology and everyday ubiquitous systems, e.g., pervasive public displays
or mobile devices, to enable novel interaction methods within spatially
separated environments. There are many opportunities to create such
interactions: We are constantly connected to the internet, and our devices
know about our peers, our current and past locations, our daily routines,
our agendas. They can sense manifold information like noise levels,
proximity to other persons, or can detect available services in public space.
It is up to us to exploit these technologies and create sophisticated
interaction methods for spatially separated social interaction.

We invite contributions from researchers and practitioners of related fields,
including pervasive and ubiquitous computing, spatial cognition, social
computing, social network analysis, human-computer interaction and
communication science.

Themes

This workshops seeks for contributions including (but not limited to) the
following themes:

* Recognition of Social Activities
* Multimodal Representation of Social Activities
* Impact of Spatial Separation on Social Behavior
* Social Network Analysis (as long as related to social interaction
over a distance)
* Case Studies of Social Ubiquitous Systems
* Social Computing in Spatially Separated Environments
* Transitions between Implicit and Explicit Interactions
* Privacy Issues of Social Ubiquitous Systems
* Acceptance of Social Ubiquitous Systems
* Context-based Reasoning in Spatially Separated Environments
* Spatial Cognition in Spatially Separated Environments
* Interaction Design in Distributed Display Environments


Submissions

We are aiming for an interactive and synergetic workshop day. Thus, this
year we are explicitly encouraging the submission of proposals for
demonstrations of technology and prototypes meeting the scope of the call.
Accepted demos will be presented on the workshop day during hands-on
sessions or a short talk.

We will accept contributions of up to 4 pages submitted in UbiComp 2011
proceedings style (http://www.ubicomp.org/ubicomp2011/templates.html)
addressing research, ongoing work, ideas, concepts, and critical questions
related to the use of technology to support social interaction between
spatially separated groups and individuals. We are looking for research
results, case studies, position papers, technology prototypes, and demos.

Contributions should be submitted through the workshop submission system
(https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=sissi2...). They will be
reviewed by the program committee and successful candidates will present
their work at the workshop. All accepted workshop papers will be made
available in the ACM Digital Library and the supplemental proceedings of
UbiComp '11.

Note that workshop attendees are expected to register both for
UbiComp '11 and SISSI '11 through the UbiComp registration site.
