The Arts & Culture Unit of ATINER is organizing a Stream on “Dialogue in Performance: Pre-, During and Post-Production”, 11-14 June 2018, Athens, Greece as part of the 9th Annual International Conference on Visual and Performing Arts sponsored by the Athens Journal of Humanities & Arts.
This stream examines the role of dialogue today in storytelling on camera, on independent, world and studio sets. We aim at soliciting discussion from film actors, directors, editors, writers, mixers, dialogue directors/editors and others responsible for the dialogue of a film. Often, a director or DP will watch a scene without headphones on because the focus of the storytelling in Film was first, and often still is, about the picture. On set, there are, usually, 15 or so departments devoted to the image and only three dedicated to the dialogue – Mixer/Boom, dialogue or dialect coach and writer (if they are allowed on set). What purpose does dialogue fill in today’s film work? How important has it become in the 88 years since it was first introduced? We don’t make silent films today. But, much of what is prized in filmmaking is non-verbal. How do we support the artist with the responsibility of delivering the words? Is it solely the responsibility of the directors/director? How important is “Production sound” vs. ADR? Often Post-Production Supervisor will get every single line of dialogue in ADR, “just for safety.” Can a performance be improved in ADR? How often is the writer consulted in the final product? What are the writers feelings about the dialogue vs. the picture? How is this taught in film school today when few directors have ever taken a voice or acting class?
You may participate as presenter of one paper, chair or/and organizer of a session, or observer.

Special arrangements will be made with a local hotel for a limited number of rooms at a special conference rate. In addition, a number of special events will be organized: A pragmatic symposium (as organized in Ancient Athens but fine tuned to synchronous ethics), a special one-day educational island tour, a Mycanae and island of Poros visit, an Athens educational walking tour, an one-day visit to Delphi and an ancient Corinth and Cape Sounion visit. Chaffee, Assistant Professor, Department of Theatre & Dance, Tulane University, USA. Abstracts should include the following: Title of Paper, Full Name (s), Affiliation, Current Position, an email address, and at least 3 keywords that best describe the subject of your submission. Decisions are reached within 4 weeks.

The association was established in 1995 as an independent world association of Academics and Researchers. Its mission is to act as a forum where Academics and Researchers from all over the world can meet in Athens, in order to exchange ideas on their research, and to discuss future developments in their disciplines.
The organizing and hosting of International Conferences and Symposiums, the carrying out of Research, and the production of Publications are the basic activities of ATINER. Since 1995, ATINER has organized more than 400 International Conferences and other events, and has published close to 200 books. In 2012, the Association launched a series of conference paper publications (click here), and at the beginning of 2014, it introduced its own series of Journals (click here).
Academically, the Association is organized into seven Divisions and 37 Units. Each Unit organizes at least one Annual International Conference, and may also undertake various small and large research projects.
