We are just beginning to realize the extent of the changes that connected technologies will bring. Their improvement (miniaturization, perception capacities, communication capabilities, decision-making, data storage, energetical autonomy, cost, etc.) as well as their diffusion will continue to progress until all facets of human activity.
Industry and services are obviously concerned: plant of the future, maintenance systems, e-health, etc. We can already observe the first impacts of this revolution:
The progress of connected technologies accelerates the convergence of products and services, which is accompanied by a shift in value added towards the latter and the players in this sector.
Near-instant access to data promotes integration throughout the lifecycle, from the designer to the user.
The operational processes themselves see all kinds of connected devices arriving enabling localization, recognition, dematerialization, etc.
Beyond the functional contribution, these technologies lead to break-throughs in the decision-making paradigms of industry and services. On the one hand, by the increased and distributed decision-making capacities of systems that now share decisions with humans. On the other hand, by developing communications between the product and its environment throughout the life cycle, thus erasing the boundaries between those parts of the same connected system. These changes are at the root of the explosion of the quantities of accessible data and contribute to the major evolution of decision support systems.
