The IEEE PervSC Workshop addresses the challenges associated with pervasive sensing and computing in light of the two key issues in the Internet of Things (IoT): heterogeneity and scalability. Due to the large number of diverse technologies, requirements, and applications in the IoT, heterogeneity is expected to exist on an unprecedented scale. Thus, we argue that wide scale pervasive sensing can only exist if the following areas are addressed: 1) flexible digitalization architectures that allow sensors and actuators to be easily integrated with everyday objects, 2) local and global service discovery protocols that consider heterogeneity as a key factor, 3) semantic architectures that leverage machine understanding of object metadata, 4) intelligent and context?-aware frameworks that enable new smart applications, 5) new cloud and fog computing service models that facilitate availability of data on a wide scale, and 6) security and privacy frameworks to ensure trust and usability.
The workshop aims to incite comprehensive discussions that include all key areas in pervasive sensing and computing. These discussions would encourage inter?disciplinary research that results in marketable products and innovative ideas.
