The deployment of ICT based health systems is based on the infrastructure of existing communication and networking systems, hence, resulting in ICT based connected health. The performance of connected health systems is of crucial importance due to several factors, first, these systems are safety critical ones where health and live is involved. Second, the sensitivity of the information communicated and shared in the connected health infrastructures impose several security concerns. Finally, the performance of connected health devices and networks is of great importance due to the urgent need to reduce energy consumption due to several reasons, including increase of the global carbon dioxide emissions, and limited availability of energy source for certain medical devices, such as sensors. This has initiated the need to innovate in the area of safe, energy efficient, and reliable connected health.
In terms of energy efficiency, it is essential to work on devices and systems with low energy consumption due to known reasons. In addition, it is reported that implementing relevant and appropriate performance measures of energy efficiency is challenging in a healthcare environment because several ICT based devices or applications in health domain require continues energy supply. On the other hand, each health service differs in terms of its clinical services, patient activity and use. For instance, the following report by the Victorian Hospital in Australia highlights the outrages budget allocated for energy consumption and outlines recommendations for green energy efficient connected health systems.
The workshop will bring together researchers from academia, industry and government in order to present the state of the art in the emerging area of the use of cloud systems in connected health infrastructure and applications.
