International Workshop on the M2M and H2H Communications Coexistence on 5G
Cellular Networks (In Conjunction with the Fifth International Conference on
Selected Topics in Mobile & Wireless Networking (MoWNet’2016), April 11-13,

Experts expect that machine type communications (MTC) will be the main traffic
contributors through the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm by the 5G launch
timeframe. This leads to the question of the main wireless access technology
that will be used by machine type communication devices (MTCD). In many
deployment scenarios, the wireless cellular technology seems to be the proper
choice due to its far-reaching range which makes the machine-to-machine
(M2M) deployments possible in areas that cannot be easily reached using, for
example, capillary wireless technologies. Due to the special characteristics of
M2M traffic and in particular its generally infrequent and short-lived access
compared to human-to-human (H2H) traffic and the fact that MTCDs are generally
massively deployed over certain geographic areas, this introduces the question
of the coexistence between the M2M and H2H traffic types on cellular networks.
There are many aspects that need to be addressed. For example, how resources
will be shared and how the access priority will be decided especially with
the vast variations of M2M application types and nature. Add to this the
rather
strict quality of service requirements that are imposed by some H2H
applications
such as audio and video conferencing. From network operator’s perspective, M2M
traffic is a new arena of operations that they are not familiar with. They need
to understand how they need to go about supporting
this kind of traffic, and how they will balance its needs with those of the
incumbent H2H traffic. Moreover, due to the vastly different nature of M2M
traffic from that of H2H traffic, the accounting issues and service charges
will have to be different in case of M2M traffic. All the previous issues
are only a representative of a large assortment of technical and business
challenges that need to be addressed for a successful proliferation of M2M
applications that can truly transform human lives like never experienced in
the past.
This workshop will therefore be a venue for identifying the issues, from all
perspectives, associated with the coexistence of M2M and H2H communications
on 5G wireless cellular networks. The objective is to also solicit technical
and business solutions from both researchers and network operators to address
these issues.
Authors are therefore invited to submit their papers discussing research
topics related to M2M and H2H communications coexistence on 5G cellular
networks. Topics include (but are not limited to):
? M2M admission control techniques in cellular networks
? M2M network attachment issues and methods
? M2M and H2H optimized resource sharing
? Massive MIMO as a possible M2M/H2H coexistence technology
? Securing MTCD access to cellular networks
? Virtualization solutions for M2M/H2H traffic types
? M2M services commissioning
? Accounting profiles and strategies for M2M communications
