Topics/Call fo Papers

The purpose of the series to is to provide emerging scholars with an opportunity to share their work at the intersection of measuring learning behaviors and strategies within digital learning environments using trace, telemetry, or log data. Each invited author will produce a 5-10 page paper that describe how student-level data can be leveraged to better understand methodological, theoretical or educational practice issues. Authors are encouraged to collaborate with their faculty advisors and research team in preparing proposals and the white paper. Topics to address include approaches for using measures in early warning systems, building and using detectors, building measure of hard-to-assess constructs including so called noncognitive factors, triangulating multiple measures, etc.
Authors will receive support during the writing process from researchers from the A4L team at SRI International who will share insights and strategies concerning the use of data from digital learning environments, along with providing professional development concerning the use of Evidence Centered Design as a framework for developing valid and reliable measures. Invited authors will also be provided with a stipend of $1000. The papers will be disseminated as part of a set of white papers alongside those prepared by senior faculty and researchers working on similar projects.
About A4L
A4L is a Building Community and Capacity project funded by the National Science Foundation to explore the measurement of student constructs described as “noncognitive constructs” in digital learning environments. The project accomplishes this goal by supporting three core community and capacity building activities: engaging and supporting a community of researchers, developing resources for the community, and dissemination of resources and products. Learn more about A4L.
One of the primary activities of A4L is to support communication across the community by providing a common language and format with which to share work. This paper series will include short papers (approximately 5 pages) that present documentation of the measurements developed and used. Documentation will be common across papers to maximize their utility for readers. Documentation will take the form of A4L design pattterns and worked examples (see Resources for examples).
Proposal Process
Interested graduate students are encouraged to complete a proposal form (below).
Proposals will be accepted until December 15, 2015.
Final decisions and invitations to author papers will be announced by January 15, 2016.
A webinar on Evidence-Centered Design will be held the first week of February, 2016.
First drafts of the papers will be due in the first week of April, 2016.
Final versions of the papers will be due June 1, 2016.
