Instructor: Tom Barron
Description:
Existing healthcare occupancies (hospitals, nursing homes, limited care facilities, etc.) are required to comply with NFPA 101 Life Safety Code (LSC) by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), States and local building codes. This webinar describes and explains key LSC health care occupancies (code sections 18 and 19) requirements that are important to maintain a safe environment for your staff and patients against loss of life due to a single source fire event.
Webinar will discuss about authority having jurisdiction (AHJ), defense-in-depth concept and staff responsibilities, smoke compartment requirements, fundamental requirements for reasonable life safety assurance in building design and arrangement, means of egress concepts and requirements (single story), detection and communication of an alarm, protection from hazards and occupancy operating features.
Why Should you Attend:
As a facility owner, administrator, healthcare professional, or facility maintenance/ operations supervisor you need to ensure LSC requirements are implemented effectively. Being able to recognize and correct LSC deficient condition(s) is a critical element for ensuring staff and patient safety. If your facility is seeking initial accreditation, or have an upcoming renewal survey, understanding the LSC portion of the accreditation process can help reduce potential Code citations and denial of accreditation.
Objectives of the Presentation:
Describe what the NFPA LSC is and is not and how the Code is structured to locate requirement information.
Describe the fundamental requirements for reasonable life safety assurance in building design and arrangement.
Explain the "defense-in-depth" concept and staff responsibilities in event of a fire.
Explain key requirements for ensuring safe means of egress from single story health care occupancies and between smoke compartments.
Describe alarm detection and notification/communication requirements.
Explain how to recognize conditions that may be in violation of protection from hazards requirements.
Build awareness for integration of LSC operating features requirements into daily facility activities.
Who can Benefit:
Healthcare facility operations and maintenance personnel
Facility administrators, nursing supervisors and nursing staff
Compliance / accreditation staff
