The workshop will hold a central position within the prestigious IEEE International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedicine (BIBM-2014), held in the historic and vibrant city of Belfast, in Northern Ireland, United Kingdom, on 2-5 November 2014
Assistive technology is an umbrella term for any device, system or smart space that facilitates individuals or groups to perform a task that they would otherwise be unable to do, enhances their experience, or increases the ease and safety with which the task can be performed
The goal of this inaugural workshop is to advance the understanding of the sensor and actuator technologies available in the homes of people availing of assistive technologies as well as understanding their context and well being arising from inferences of the sensor data. The workshop is relevant within the wider context of bioinformatics and biomedicine as older people in developed economies are likely to remain at home for longer and will need support from emerging technologies in order to cope at home as frailty, cognitive impairment, propensity to falls and susceptibility to chronic diseases increases with age.
Therefore, the workshop presents the opportunity for those in the bioinformatics and biomedicine research community with an active interest in assistive technologies to participate at a relevant and focused workshop hosted within an internationally recognized conference.
