FIA 2014 - The Future Internet - Future Internet Assembly 2014: Softwarization of Infrastructures

The Future Internet Assembly (FIA) is a research community driven initiative supported by more than 150 research projects that have recognised the need to strengthen European activities on the Future Internet to maintain European competitiveness in the global marketplace. The community has established a successful, unique, conference that brings together experts from several distinct but interrelated areas in the EU Framework Programme 7. They share scientific and technical results and discuss cross-domain research topics around the notion of creating new Future Internet technologies, applications, and services with a global view.
FIA’s history started in spring 2008 in Bled, Slovenia, and the Spring of 2014 will see the 11th FIA conference in Athens, Greece. As with previous FIAs, the community is editing a book, which aggregates both, representative results achieved in the Future Internet domain and the possibilities of what can be expected in a medium or short term.

The key element for the success of the Future Internet Assembly is that it facilitates cross-domain fertilization of technical research topics, interwoven with socio-economic aspects and requirements from multiple sector applications.

FIA Book 2014 Subjects and System Areas
Authors are invited to submit full or short papers that fall into, or are related to a group of Future Internet subjects (I) and at least one of the networked system and service areas (II) that are listed below. Within the structure of the book, the following topics are expected to be covered:
Softwarization of Infrastructures for Future Internet
Mature and integrated virtualisation and programmability at all levels including software driven networks, network function virtualisation, programmable networks, virtual networks, network as a service, software defined datacentre, mobile computing clouds, computing and storage clouds and End-2-End service quality and SLA considerations for Cloud hosted services.
New Internet infrastructure technologies based on network/cloud integration through Software Defined Networking (SDN), Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), and innovative software and services that enable application innovation.
Integrated and simplified network and service self-management of physical and virtual resources including at the network and service layer.
Novel architectures and technologies to cope with the vision of a massive capacity increase by 2020, coupled with increased power efficiency and end-to-end latency optimization. High capacity of air interfaces beyond 4G.
Open platforms (incl. open source) to facilitate network operations/testing and network programmability
Future Internet foundations
Disruptive approaches to solve pending problems of the internet infrastructure and operations.
Integrated and autonomic management approaches that reduce operational expenses by an order of magnitude.
Smart optical wired and wireless technologies.
Advanced virtual computing architectures.
Energy efficient infrastructures.
Applications and Experimentation
Mature and integrated smart infrastructures including Internet of Things and Smart Cities.
Techno-socio-economic considerations with respect to future Internet infrastructures.
Productivity gains in societal related fields and boost of future Internet services in the sectors.
Relevant requirements towards infrastructure demonstration and experimentation in Europe.
Experimentation infrastructures for future Internet infrastructures and services.
Scope
The contributions are expected to focus on validated results achieved and on integration and interoperation of systems across the above described areas. Long term visions of the future Internet infrastructure are also encouraged. In particular late-breaking advances and approaches’ evaluation reports are welcome. Paper submissions must present original, unpublished research or experiences. Papers under review elsewhere must not be submitted to the FIA Book 2014.

Submission of full contributions
The submission and acceptance of contributions will be subject to a rigorous peer review process to ensure originality, timeliness, relevance, and readability. Authors of accepted contributions will be invited in turn to submit camera-ready versions of their contributions, which will be subject to further review, acceptance, and a potential revision. The maximum length will be 12 pages using the LNCS format (templates can be found here: www.springer.com/computer/lncs
Submission of short contributions
Long term visions, position statements and late-breaking research advances and approaches are explicitly encouraged. These contributions will be subject to the same peer review process with the only difference that the maximum length will be 8 pages using the LNCS format (templates can be found here: www.springer.com/computer/lncs
Invited Contributions
A number of high quality invited papers are also envisaged.
