Schematic Mapping Workshop 2014
First International Workshop on Schematic Mapping

schematicmapping-AT-gmail.com
2-3 April 2014
Wivenhoe House Hotel, University of Essex, UK
Usability of public transport schematics has become of key
importance over the last few years. There has been
renewed interest in traditional diagrams, alongside new
mapping concepts that may better help the traveller to
navigate the increasing complexity of public transport networks.
This workshop is intended to bring researchers and
practitioners together to explore the current state of the
art in map design, to integrate future research directions,
and to discuss plans for providing the travelling public with
improved navigation aids. We solicit proposals for:
- Papers presenting novel research
- Posters summarizing current projects
- New map designs
See http://www.schematicmapping.org/ for more details.
The workshop will also include invited position papers
summarizing the current state of the art, which will feed
into sessions devoted to discussing key issues and future
plans for research.
Subject areas include, but are not restricted to:
- Theoretical approaches to schematic usability
- Novel schematic designs
- New methods for automatic layout
- Methods for measuring map quality
- Usability studies
- Critiques of existing schematics
- Schematic mapping and portable devices
- Historical approaches to mapping transport systems
- The role of cognition in understanding schematics
We solicit three types of contribution:
- Regular papers, with a 4 page limit
- Research posters, which should comprise a 2 page abstract
- New map designs, which comprise the design and a 1 page description
Regular papers are intended for those presenting original
research. Research posters are intended for those
summarizing current projects or new techniques at an early
stage of development. New map designs are intended for those
submitting fresh alternatives to current official designs.
We also welcome suggestions for position papers. Please
contact the conference organizers directly with these.
Submission Dates
Position papers: 1 November 2013
- Regular papers, research posters and new map designs: 16 December 2013
- Notification of acceptance: 14 February 2014
- Conference Dates: 2-3 April 2014
