Wireless sensors are assumed to be battery-powered devices with limited on-board energies and signal processing capabilities. When properly programmed and networked, wireless sensors form wireless sensor networks (WSNs) which are very useful in a variety of applications such as battlefield surveillance, environment and health monitoring, and disaster relief operations. On the other hand, the design of a WSN should involve consideration of stringent system resources such as sensor energy or available communication bandwidth. Inference driven sensor management policies can maintain the desired inference performance, while conserving from the system resources significantly. As an example, dense sensor deployment may introduce redundancy in coverage, so retrieving a subset of sensor measurements may still provide information with the desired quality.
