Introduction
Ecosystem monitoring describes the processes and activities that need to take place to characterize and monitor the quality of the ecosystem. Modern ecosystem monitoring typically employs state-of-the-art geo-spatial information technology such as remote sensing, and geographical information system and is used in the preparation of environmental impact assessments, as well as in many circumstances in which human activities carry a risk of harmful effects on the natural environment. In all cases the results of monitoring will be reviewed, analyzed statistically and modeled, aiming to provide scientific facts and evidences for better ecosystem management.
Ecosystem management is a process that aims to conserve major ecological services and restore natural resources while meeting the socio-economic, political and cultural needs of current and future generations. The principal objective of ecosystem management is the efficient maintenance and ethical use of natural resources. Ecosystem management acknowledges that the interrelation of socio-cultural, economic and ecological systems is paramount to understanding the circumstances that affect environmental goals and outcomes. It is a multifaceted and holistic approach which requires a significant change in how the natural and human environments are identified.
The workshop is an important meeting for researchers who are actively engaged in ecosystem management and in undertaking the ecological and environmental survey and natural resource inventory. The aim of the workshop is to provide a platform for scholar exchange among international academics, researchers and postgraduate students in the fields of ecosystem, environment and geo-spatial information sciences. One highlight of the workshop is the international collaborative research on ecosystem monitoring and management in central Asian region, where the recent environmental change responding to global change and economic development has been accelerating, causing great concerns about the potential catastrophic consequences on the fragile ecosystem. It is believed that a better understanding on the ecosystem feedback to the human impacts is the key for environmentally sound ecosystem management, and the central Asian region provides a unique study case for this, with the multi-disciplinary approach of geography, ecology, environmental and geo-spatial information sciences.
Themes of the Symposium
The suggested topics of the symposium include, but not limited to, the follows:
New approach and technology for long-term ecosystem monitoring
High-resolution ecosystem management system for very large region
Spatio-temporal pattern recognition and modelling of ecosystem change
Cloud computing for ecosystem monitoring, modelling and management
Environmental indices for ecosystem management
Environmental and ecosystem responses to human impacts
Global change and regional ecosystem responses
Ecosystem processes and computer simulation
Central Asia ecosystem management system and research network
TBA … …
Workshop Format
The symposium will feature oral presentations including keynote and invited presentations and technical sessions. It is intended to allocate at least 25 minute for each oral presentation allowing time for discussion. Field excursions to selected unique ecosystem sites in Hong Kong will be organized as the integral part of the workshop to encourage discussion and exchange on practical cases.
Workshop Itinerary

21 December 2012 Opening ceremony, key note and invited presentations, technical sessions, conference reception
22 December 2012 Field excursion in Hong Kong (Mai Po Nature Reserve and Tai Po Kau Special Area)
23 December 2012 Technical tours and panel discussion
Abstract Submission
The extended abstract (800-1200 words, 2-3 pages, single space) should be submitted via e-mail to emm2012-AT-hkbu.edu.hk. The abstract will be reviewed before it is included in the workshop technical program.
