With increasing data rates supported by evolving generation of wireless networks, multimedia services such as real-time video content delivery to mobile users are becoming ever popular. In the past, telecommunications service providers used several methods for measuring the Quality of Service (QoS) for the audio and video services provided to their consumers. Most of these methods relied on determining the quality of the underlying transport network. In recent years, the concept of QoS continues to be important in the service provider environment, but a new concept termed the Quality of Experience (QoE) is rapidly emerging. QoE, also known as quality of user experience, is a subjective measure of a customer's experiences with a service. The QoE concept differs from that of QoS in that it considers much more than the performance of the network (e.g., packet loss, delay and jitter). QoE is concerned with the overall experience the consumer has when accessing and using provided services. Experience is both user and context-dependent. Subjective QoE evaluation is however time consuming and not suitable for real-time media streaming applications, hence there is a growing demand for objective QoE evaluation. QoE metrics are considered more effective in terms of user satisfaction than traditional techniques that focus solely on objective QoS metrics such as throughput, throughput-based fairness. QoE models that include user perception and user behaviour are of essential importance for QoE-aware optimization of wireless multimedia communication systems.
On the other hand, the global information and communication technology industry is a fast growing contributor to the electrical energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. With an increasing number of mobile subscribers, a significant increase in world wide mobile data and traffic can be expected in the near future. Energy saving and environmental protection become an urgent demand and a global trend recently. How to enhance the energy efficiency and maintain satisfying QoE perceived by users from the perspective of green wireless network design has recently attracted intensive worldwide research efforts.
This workshop invites submissions on the latest research on QoE-aware energy-efficient wireless networks. The scope the workshop includes, but is not limited to:
QoE metrics and evaluation methodologies (subjective, objective, pseudo-subjective, etc.)
Energy efficient metrics and evaluation methodologies
QoE metrics for upcoming 3-D video streaming applications
QoE models and their applications in wireless multimedia services
