Workshop on Casemix analysis and Data Mining for Healthcare Industry
Case mix system is a classification of patients treatment episodes designed to create classes, which are relatively homogenous in respect of the resource used, and which contain patient with the similar clinical characteristics. Whereas, Data mining has aided in several aspects of healthcare management including disease diagnosis, decision-making for treatments, medical fraud prevention and detection, fault detection of medical devices, healthcare quality improvement strategies and privacy. The Integrated approach to health care is expected to yield significant benefits in financing health care, the use of comparative casemix data for quality improvement activities with data mining, and the provision of information that enables hospitals to understand their cost behaviour and reinforces the effective and resilient services.
Data mining provides the technology and methodology to analyse mass volume of data to detect hidden patterns in data. Data mining also helps to discover interesting patterns or correlations amongst health data that can influence cost efficiency and yet maintain a high quality of healthcare. This approach can be used to gauge the use of resources in providing treatment according to the patients' conditions in Healthcare system. It combines the enormous numbers of diagnosis codes, procedure codes and taking into account severity of illness, age of patient, co-morbidities, complications and discharged status into groups with a more meaningful output.
This workshop explores potential data mining applications in the general casemix context, which is expected to yield effective and efficient health care service, will result in good quality service and cost containment in healthcare industry. In particular, it illustrates how data mining can be beneficial in allocating hospital resources using case-mix system according to work load will ensure all expenses used efficiently and produce a better quality of care. This will also improve the communication network between doctors and specialists from various discipline involved in taking care of the patients.
The workshop encourages the following topics (but is not limited to) related to the case mix analysis and data mining to healthcare:
Data Mining applications in the context of casemix
