AAAL aims at bringing together leading researchers from both academia and industry to present and discuss applications of agent-based systems for Ambient Assisted Living (AAL).
Within the last few years Ambient Assisted Living has attracted huge attention due to the demographic changes of our societies. The number of elders will double over the next 30-40 years in Europe, and currently the workforce is four times larger than the retired, which will change to 2:1 in 2050. Also the health budgets are exploding.
Thus, new technological solutions must be introduced to provide care and handle daily tasks for elders and people with other disabilities. Such systems should increase self-sustainability, mobility, quality-of-life, etc. of the assisted person. AAL systems are also integrated into the immediate personal environment of the assisted person, and the systems should adapt to the user rather than aiming for general solutions. So individual preferences and needs are crucial for the success of AAL system, and there is a need for AAL technologies that can acts independently on behalf of their user or support the user during daily activities.
Agents are a natural approach both in concept, methodology, and implementation tools for such systems, due to the focus of individuality and the need of systems that autonomously can act intelligent in various settings.
