IPCC 2012 invites proposals for papers, panels, and workshops that address the relationship between sustainability and communication. Communication plays a key role in helping us conceptualize, analyze, and solve the environmental challenges of the 21st century. As human beings grapple with environmental change, we rely on effective written, oral, and visual communication to understand concepts as wide-ranging as product life cycles, ecosystems, climate change, sustainability standards, national and international programs and regulations, alternative energy sources, and related issues.
Communication strategies (writing, speaking, visualization) that are effective in representing sustainability concepts
Case-studies of sustainability-related communication
Ways in which communication practices can support sustainability efforts
Assessments of the impact of efforts to communicate issues surrounding sustainability
Analyses of ways in which the political, social, and cultural perceptions of sustainability shape and are shaped by communication
International and global perspectives on communication and sustainability
Challenges posed by efforts to communicate sustainability-related issues
Strategies for or barriers to integrating sustainability issues into undergraduate or graduate curricula for technical communication professionals
Strategies for or barriers to teaching students in engineering and related majors to effectively communicate sustainability-related issues in their fields
We also welcome papers on other professional communication topics by technical communicators, including engineers and engineering educators.
