Welcome to the first international workshop on Place Intelligence, Urban Sensing, and Activity Recognition (in conjunction with PIComm 2011 - http://www.swinflow.org/confs/picom2011)

Recently, the development of mobile phone technology has improved people’s communications but the mobile device is increasingly a portal to the surroundings and ambient services. Mobile phones are carried by people and can be found everywhere, especially in urban environments. In addition, most urban places are covered with wireless networks, which enable users to be always connected. Place intelligence focuses on understanding the role of place and people's context. Furthermore, understanding and recognizing the current status of the city in real-time can contribute to the management of the city and help inhabitants optimize their lifestyle. Such urban sensing requires not only technologies but also foundational theories as well as understanding of social aspects of technology. Context-aware computing is associated with activity recognition. Recently, there has been a lot of work on activity recognition for individuals with applications from health to commerce. However, recognizing (and reasoning with) group activities or social activities over urban environments and places still remain open issues.

The aim of PIUSAR is to bring together computer scientists, industry practitioners, and researchers to discuss and exchange experimental and theoretical results, novel designs, work-in-progress, experience, case studies, and trend-setting ideas in the areas of Place Intelligence, Urban Sensing and Activity Recognition.
