From the joint will of people and entities of the academic, associative, industrial, medical and student bodies spew the initiative to cater a meeting that could reunite them all every year throughout the Portuguese territory.
The theme in this first initiative is “Bioengineering and Medical Sciences, the challenge of the XXI century”, which sets the motto for a sustained and transversal development in an emerging Engineering subject which we believe will become the recipient of some of Men’s highest achievements in the near future.
The primary goal of this meeting is to promote and publicize each of these bodies along the others and to provide conditions for the flourishment of synergies. The secondary goal is the disclosure of tools and mechanisms that allow for the development of these bodies either per se or in cooperation. With these purposes, the meeting is sustained in the following five pillars:
? Academic excellence
? Applied research
? Entrepreneurship
? Synergies
? Identification of opportunities and means.

The meeting program encompasses:
? presentation of academic work by researchers and alumni;
? show of applied research carried out in enterprises and industries both Portuguese and international;
? display of recent success cases of Portuguese entrepreneurship;
? analysis of the Portuguese, Iberian and European context in Bioengineering;
? mechanisms for the launching, financial support and intellectual property protection of enterprises:

? Entrepreneurship Office of Instituto Superior Técnico;

? IAPMEI’s FINICIA program;

? Financing programs of Agência de Inovação, AdI;

? Portuguese Association of Business Angels.

The presentation of scientific research work will take place in the first two days of the meeting, following a dynamics that is inverse relative to what is a commonplace in conferences. There will only be one session of presentations and there will be no poster session. The goal is to boost synergies among distinct subjects in Bioengineering and Medical Sciences, promoting the presence of all attendees in every presentation regardless of the theme, thus avoiding the typical subject scission.
The alumni will have the opportunity to:
? get acquainted with the Portuguese and international realities in the context of Bioengineering;
? interact with key players in the job market;
? have their work recognized by Portuguese researchers and present it to a peer audience. (To that end, alumni that are finishing up Bologna Master Thesis or have completed them within the last three years are invited to submit them (see Thesis Submission). The submitted work will be evaluated by the technical advisor panel of the EMBS Portuguese Chapter. From these, the best 20 will be chosen and notified. The best 3 will be able to make an oral presentation, while the remaining 17 will be invited to show their work in a dedicated poster session.)
Enterprises and industry partners will be able to:
? take advantage from a 400 m2 space for stands;
? set up demonstration sessions and meetings with partners;
? get acquainted with the mechanisms to establish applied research partnerships with universities;
? identify the academic teams behind each subject and directly and locally establish the endeavored applied research protocols;
? interact with intellectual property specialists, business angles and financing agents.

Above all, we hope this meeting can boost the cooperation and interplay spirit between the different Bioengineering key players and bring together Portugal, from the seashore to the interior regions and from north to south. We are counting on your presence.
