Sexuality 2011 - Fourth UK Conference for the ‘Sexuality in Social Work Symposium’
Topics/Call fo Papers
Conflict or resolution: Enter the Equality Act - Fourth UK Conference for the ‘Sexuality in Social Work Symposium’
1st & 2nd September 2011, Glasgow Caledonian University
The UK Equality Act 2010 consolidates the culminated achievements from the last decade in seeking to develop a robust set of laws for promoting equality and equal opportunity on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. On the one hand, these legal achievements constitute a powerful framework for supporting social work principles of anti-discrimination, change and social justice. On the other, the law continues to retain exemptions and gaps, for example exemptions in anti-discrimination measures for religious employers, which work against anti-oppressive principles. The commencement of the Equality Act is a timely point for reflecting on the advances made in social work practice, research and education to date in the arena of sexuality and equality. It is also a pivotal time for identifying what further developments are required to ensure that issues of sexuality, sexual identity and diversity are recognised, understood and celebrated in the social work profession and more widely considered in the provision of social care services to children and adults alike.
This conference is the third event hosted by the Sexuality in Social Work Symposium and aims to bring together social work educators, researchers, practitioners, students and service users to explore the relevance of sexuality to social work practice, education and research over a two day event. The two-day programme will include sharing of current research activity, educational practices and models, and issues encountered in practice as well as opportunities to network with members of the symposium.
