Join us and your colleagues from throughout the world to attend the 2018 WEEF-GEDC, November 12 – 16, being held in our beautiful hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico. https://weef-gedc2018.org We are honored to be chosen as the first U.S. host for this prestigious event. We encourage the academic community at home and abroad to support our efforts and take advantage of the opportunity to learn and network as we address how to educate the next generation of engineers.
Today, we are asking our students to not only excel in their field but to do so as global citizens. Are we offering them the skills and resources they need to take on this responsibility? What can we do better in our universities and classrooms? We have a provocative line up of sessions designed to explore these issues. As a leader in our academic community we need you as the table as we discuss:
· International Collaborations for Peace Engineering: What should be the body of knowledge of engineers interested in working in a global and multi-cultural world? How do we encourage students to work in true partnerships to identify, solve, and implement solutions that the community can then maintain?
· Academia/Teaching Peace Engineering: Peace engineering education involves thoughtful integration of reflective, trans disciplinary skills, practicing these skills and developing systems thinking. This happens at different levels from intentional reflective adaptation of design thinking, practicing in communities of need with awareness and appreciation of local conditions; and learning systems through formal education pathways.
· Designing a Fine MES – Engineering Ethics in an Autonomous World: Modern Era Systems (MES), including AI, autonomous robotics, big data, blockchain, all embody sophisticated mechanisms to adapt their behavior to tune and optimize results. As we develop ways to teach our students the core methods within these transformational technologies, how can we integrate and teach an ethical dimension in the design process to ensure that bleeding edge technologies actually contribute to the cause of engineering a more compassionate and peaceful world?
· Academia, Industry, Govs, Multilateral, Funding Agencies - Future of Engineering Education: How can we work together through engineering education to make a difference and address the global challenges we face?
· Disruptive Innovations in STEM Education Some higher educational institutions have developed disruptive innovations which may lead to a whole new model for STEM education. How do we cope with the challenge of preparing the professional that the 4th Industrial Revolution and the Knowledge Society are demanding?
· Transgenerational Discussions The intergenerational panel at the WEEF serves as a platform to increase dialog between stakeholders from the academic community, corporate organizations, and students. With the aim of increasing constructive communication across generations, this session sets the stage for intergenerational discussions where all voices are heard, and interactions lead to ideas for initiative and change.
· NSF, ABET, NAE, WB, UNESCO: What organizations are doing to further peace engineering and peace engineering education.
