2011, April 6 9-12 AM / 2-5 PM

S1 - Ability, Virtual Reality and Associated Technologies, April 6, 2011
This full day symposium is dedicated to the contribution of Virtual Reality and Associated Technologies to the recovery of abilities. Disciplines covered include: Virtual Reality; Cognitive Rehabilitation; Cognitive Stimulation; Motor rehabilitation; Clinical assessment; Sensory impairment; etc. In a general way, we expect contributions dedicated to therapeutic applications of Virtual Reality and Associated Technologies.

Chair: Evelyne KLINGER, Arts et Métiers ParisTech, France Co-chair: Paul SHARKEY, University of Reading, UK

Keywords & Topics: Virtual and enhanced environments - Cognitive rehabilitation - Cognitive stimulation- Motor rehabilitation - Clinical assessment - Sensory impairment - Training tools for rehabilitation

S2 - New user experiences and interfaces for the web of things
Virtualization of physical things that surrounds us presents a novel challenge for the product industry and especially User Experience (UX) practitioners. Augmenting real-world objects with virtual objects addressable on the Web allows for new machine-to-machine interactions to be designed but also for a new user experience to be shaped. Digitally extended products raise new issues in service and product design: novel user interfaces have to be designed to engage users in new services and help them to become aware of the new capabilities and smartness of products. Virtual, augmented and mixed reality communities are invited to present their work on the challenging field of the User Experience Design for the Web of Things to this symposium.

Chair: Frédérique PAIN, Alcatel Lucent, Bell Labs, France Co-chair: Simon RICHIR, Arts et Métiers ParisTech, France Assisted by: Pierrick Thebault, PhD student, Alcatel Lucent, Arts et Métiers ParisTech, France

Keywords & Topics: user experience design, service design, product design, web of things, internet of things, web services, ubiquitous computing, urban computing, paper computing, interaction design, augmented reality, mixed reality, touch interfaces, tangible interfaces, gestural interfaces, machine to machine, application delivery, smart behaviours, smart environments, smart cities.

S3 - Haptics for Telepresence, Teleoperation and Collaborative Environments
While haptic sense provides the most natural way to interact andphysically feel the environment, it also has an important role incommunication and collaboration between users through co-located andremote configurations. This workshop intends to foster exchanges among participants and exhibit recent and original findings in the field of Haptics for Telepresence, Teleoperation and Collaborative Environments

Chair: Mehdi AMMI, CNRS/LIMSI, Univ. Paris-Sud 11, Haptic-SIG, France Co-chair: Jérôme PERRET, Haption, Haptic-SIG, France

Keywords & Topics: Haptic interpersonal communication, haptic affective and emotional communication, haptic for the interpersonal awareness and presence, Telepresence, Teleoperation and Telemicro/nanomanipulation systems, Collaborative Virtual Environments, Groupwares and Computer Supported Cooperative Work systems

Workshop sponsors: - Special Interest Group on Haptics (Haptic-SIG): www.hapticsig.org - Haption: www.haption.com

S4 - New Immersive displays of the near future
Chair : Carolina Cruz-Neira, University ofLouisiana at Lafayette, USA

The New Immersive Displays of the NearFuture Symposium provides avenue to present and discuss new and innovativedisplay technologies. The past few years have brought us a flurry of displaytechnology development, from high-end large-scale displays seen in museums, movie theaters, and research centers, to high-quality mobile displays seen incell phones and portable games, to advanced displays for the home. This, combined with the affordability of the technologies to generate the visuals, such as PCs and graphics systems, are allowing a new level of creativity toproduce exciting visual environments that are high quality, interactive, andtouchable.

The symposium will explore the current trends in the development of displaytechnologies, exciting research being done in this area, and the newapplication venues that are opening by the new technologies. This one-daysymposium provides the attendees with the opportunity to expand their thinkingabout ways to use contemporary display devices in a myriad of applicationcontexts.

The symposium brings a combination ofinvited papers as well as original submissions. We want to hear what you areworking on in this fascinating area and show us how you are contributing toshape the future of display technology!

Keywords & Topics : Immersive Displays;Stereoscopic Displays; Portable Displays; Multiview, Multifocal, or HighDynamic Range Displays; Omnistereo Projection Systems; Rendering Techniques andApplications Associated with the Previous Keywords.

S5 - New technologies for new uses
The need for new products and services is accelerating at a fast pace as new usages emerge. Therefore enterprises need to speed up the innovation process and to better target the true needs of the consumers. 3D provides an appropriate response for that. This symposium will emphasize the fact that 3D and immersive environments are ideal tools for co-creation purposes and living lab approaches. As a matter of fact, virtual reality help to imagine and depict the future state of a concept or solution. Using interactive 3D platforms allows to co-visualize and co-create scenarios with the end users. 3D and virtual reality are ideal tools for co-creation.

Chair : Eric Seulliet, La Fabrique du Futur, France Co-chair : Marc Pallot, Nottingham Univ., UK

Keywords & Topics : Virtual Reality, 3D, Innovation process, Living Lab, co-creation, end-users

S6 - ReVolution Emerging top showcases
Presentation of the world's most innovative achievements in the field of virtual reality, augmented reality and their future applications.

Chair : Akihiko SHIRAI, KAIT Univ., Japan
Co-chair : Simon RICHIR, Arts et Métiers ParisTech, France

S7 - Virtual ARTS
This symposium is about Virtual Arts, all including some technologies for new kind of realization. With Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality, Virtual Reality, but also worlds inhabited by artificial creatures, modern artists can make performances, installations, real-time worlds of pictures, virtual theater, virtual cinematography, and more... The Art of XXI th century is just beginning.

Chair : Alain LIORET, Arts et Technologies de l'Image, Université Paris VIII, France Co-Chair : Jeffrey VENTRELLA, artist/researcher, San Francisco, USA, Keynote Speaker
