It has been seven years since the Great East Japan Earthquake devastated northern Japan on March 11, 2011. The most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan topped 9.0 on the Richter scale and brought tsunami waves with heights of more than 40.5 meters (133 feet) that washed away entire coastal communities leaving more than 24,500 people dead, injured or missing and a quarter of a million people displaced from their homes. The massive tsunami also led to multiple nuclear accidents at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant with Level 7 meltdowns and explosions at three of its reactors, which continues to pose a dangerous global environmental threat.
As one of the top energy consumers in the world, Japan had relied upon nuclear energy for 30% of its electrical power until the triple reactor meltdowns at Fukushima in 2011. The loss of trust in nuclear energy due to its catastrophic risk factor has caused renewed interest in alternative energy technology, smart grids, eco-design, fuel cells, life cycle assessment, energy efficiency improvement, renewable energy resources and other sources of sustainable energy with minimal impact on the environment or the climate.
Who should attend?
The 3rd Pacific Rim Energy and Sustainability Conference will be a small, intimate event focused on discussing energy issues, research and innovations in a forum ideal for learning, sharing and networking. PRESCO 2018 is for academics, researchers, students and representatives from industry, government and non-governmental organizations. The range of research submissions may include conceptual, empirical, experimental, and case studies.
We are pleased to hold this event in Hiroshima, Japan where both the inaugural and the last conference was held five years ago. Our theme for PRESCO 2018 is All Things Energy for a Sustainable Future.
We welcome submissions of 250 words in English by Friday, March 2, 2018 on the following streams:
Alternative Energy Technology
Climate Change Policy & Development
Eco-Design and Green Buildings
Ecological Economics
Energy and Environmental Quality
Energy Efficiency Improvement
Energy Policy
Fuel Cells & Hydrogen Energy
Life Cycle Assessment
Renewable Energy Resources
Sustainable Development
Sustainable Energy
Other Areas (specify please)
