The Arts & Culture Unit of ATINER is organizing a Stream on “Contemporary Visual Arts: Conceptual Art, Video Art, and Critical Art”, 11-14 June 2018, Athens, Greece as part of the 9th Annual International Conference on Visual and Performing Arts sponsored by the Athens Journal of Humanities & Arts.
This stream shall focus on contemporary visual art and criticism. This is an opportunity to analyze in detail the newest examples of modern European, American, and non-European conceptual art and video art worldwide. Both analytic and non-analytic approaches are welcome. This stream will explore the current issues in art, such as: what is the relation of modern art and its criticism and the society? Does J. Hillis Miller’s figure of the host and the parasite apply to the visual arts as well? May one attempt at a synthetic global view of the most important, dominating tendencies in contemporary art? How do they relate to and shape the postmodern sensitivity? What are the roles of art and the artist in contemporary society? Is critical art still at the frontiers of today’s avant-garde?
Finally, the aim of the stream is to trace the relation of contemporary art to modern aesthetics and philosophy, in the context of critical art and conceptual art. Academics and researchers from all areas of cultural studies (aesthetics, art history, philosophy, etc.) are more than welcome to contribute to this debate on contemporary art.
You may participate as presenter of one paper, chair or/and organizer of a session, or observer.
Fee structure information is available on www.atiner.gr/2018fees.
Special arrangements will be made with a local hotel for a limited number of rooms at a special conference rate. The organizing and hosting of International Conferences and Symposiums, the carrying out of Research, and the production of Publications are the basic activities of ATINER.
