During the last decade, power and energy systems have been shifted to new paradigm. As the emerging key technologies, renewable energy and smart have come under the spotlight. Renewable energy such as wind power and photovoltaic generation is widely spread in the world. Although it has advantage in reducing pollution and conserving resources, it brings about challenges how we deal with intermittent generation outputs. In other words, the degree of uncertainties becomes more significant. Smart Grid consists of power markets, network operation organization, and service providers as well as generation, transmission, distribution companies, and customers. Renewable energy is linked to Smart Grid in different forms. For example, wind power generation is connected to transmission systems while photovoltaic generation is to distribution systems. Power markets make each player more competitive in a sense that the maximization of profits and minimization of risks become a higher property. Under such circumstances, new functions such as demand response, V2G (Vehicle to Grid), energy storage, etc., are introduced as control tools. This symposium continues the tradition of the IFAC Symposium on Power Plants and Power Systems Control and will focus on novel research results and applications in the control of electric power and energy systems. Emphasis will be put on smart grid technologies; design, simulation and real-time operation of control and operation of renewable energy systems; microgrids; energy storage systems; distributed networks; power electronics control; virtual inertia and elimination of harmonics in inverter based systems. Contributions in the area of energy development and planning; deregulated power markets; control and development of conventional thermal hydro, and nuclear power plants; design and operation of pumped hydroelectric storage systems; operation, optimization, planning, analysis and expansion of large-scale power systems; instrumentation and control systems for thermal and nuclear plants; HVDC transmission systems and FACTS; PMU applications; Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and Control (SS); distributed control of networked smart power systems; future challenges to electrical networks and their solutions; and use of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles / intelligent autonomous vehicles are also welcome.
