Bloomberg welcomes applications for our 2017 Immersion Day fellowship program from New York City area PhD students in data science-related fields.
What is Immersion Day?
Immersion Day fellows will spend 2-3 days in mid-late August with a selected nonprofit, working closely with their data and providing visualization and analytical expertise. Then, fellows and the host nonprofits will participate in a panel at Data For Good Exchange 2017 (https://www.bloomberg.com/company/d4gx/). Who is qualified to participate?
New York City area PhD students in computer science, data science or related fields, with
Expertise in data analytics
Expertise in data visualization
Strong communication skills
An interest in making a difference
What nonprofits are participating in Immersion Day 2017? What do they expect from a fellow?
Participating nonprofits, in no particular order, are:
Matriculate
Bloomberg Philanthropies, City of New Haven
Bloomberg Associates, City of Paris
Bloomberg Associates, Bogota, Colombia

Bringing Hope Home
Common themes in the goals for the non-profits include: prototype data visualizations to assess program participants’ progress through key milestones; design and prototype dashboards to allow decision makers to monitor programs; recommend tools for analyzing temporal and spatial data created by the programs.

A brief (1-page max) statement of your data science skills (e.g. programming languages, previous projects)
