Although the definition of what fifth generation (5G) systems exactly are is still evolving, there is a general consensus in both the industrial and academic communities that the evolution toward 5G will be accompanied by the exploitation of high frequency bands (above 6 GHz) to support high data rates of up to multi-gigabits per seconds. However, spectrum below 6 GHz (Sub-6 GHz) will continue to play a key role. In fact, standardization bodies and mobile operators are actively looking for utilizing the Sub-6 GHz spectrum in the future 5G systems. Worldwide innovation leaders such as Huawei and Qualcomm are already exploiting Sub-6 GHz in their 5G system implementations. In fact, at the Mobile World Congress in Shanghai in 2015, Huawei demonstrated the first 5G testbed working in the Sub-6 GHz frequency band and Qualcomm announced a 5G New Radio prototype system, operating also in the Sub-6 GHz spectrum bands. Hence, future 5G systems will rely on the concurrent exploitation of a wide range of spectrum bands, above and below 6 GHz, spanning existing and new radio access technologies, which will be integrated together to facilitate low latency and ubiquitous, seamless connectivity, as well as a wide range of use cases. This introduces numerous challenges, including the allocation and management of radio spectrum, coexistence and interoperability of heterogeneous networks, and an explosively increasing energy consumption. The effective deployment of 5G networks has to cope with the aforementioned challenges, which in turn calls for the identification of novel network architectures, protocols, and algorithms. The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum for researchers to discuss and disseminate the most promising contributions on the analysis, design, optimization, implementation, and engineering of network solutions operating at Sub-6 GHz frequencies for 5G networks. Accordingly, the workshop will focus on, but will not be limited to, the following subjects of
interest:
- Sub-6 GHz network architecture and protocol design for 5G systems
- Coexistence design and solutions for heterogeneous and independently operating Sub-6 GHz networks for 5G systems
