Overview: The webinar topic will be a presentation and analysis of the key advantages and disadvantages of current electronic medical records systems for providers, hospitals, patients, and other stakeholders, the unanticipated problems and issues, a discussion of emerging evidence-based approaches to improving the implementation, effectiveness, and ease of use of EMRs, and a discussion of what the future holds for the further evolution of EMRs. The anticipated benefits of those who designed EMRs included: improved billing and coding accuracy, improved quality of care and outcomes, saved time for busy physicians, decrease costs of care, and active engagement of patients in their care.
Although these benefits have been largely realized in some delivery settings, many physicians and other providers continue to be frustrated with the typical disadvantages of EMRs: high initial costs and maintenance costs, often oriented to billing rather than clinical care, require excessive time and training to use, interference in the doctor-patient relationship, greater privacy and security issues, lack of interoperability to allow the sharing of data across EMR systems and health settings, and most do not readily provide data needed for care measures required for the emerging value-based reimbursement programs, etc. Discussion will include key contextual and other factors that enhance effective implementation and use as well as a description of the likely evolution of health IT and EHRs in the next decade and the changes needed to realize the promise of EMRs.
Why should you Attend: Although EMRs have been shown to have positive impacts on health care and outcomes and are increasingly being required or incentivized by federal and other payers of care, many physicians and other health care providers are increasingly concerned and frustrated with the perceived negative factors: steep initial and ongoing costs, increased training and documentation time, implementation difficulties, how to comply with payer requirements, patient privacy concerns, and intrusion in the provider-patient relationships, among others.
This webinar will discuss and address both the positive and negative aspects of EMRs and provide advice concerning effective techniques or approaches for enhancing the positive aspects and managing or reducing the impact of the EMR barriers or issues on health care providers, patients, payers, quality improvement professionals, researchers, and other key stakeholder groups. Maggie Gunter , PhD. Director of Medical Outcomes Research, Albuquerque, NM. Dr. Gunter is an experienced and respected health services researcher and medical sociologist who was among the early innovators in disease management, case management, and use of data to evaluate and improve care and measure population health. She founded the Lovelace Clinic Foundation 25 years ago, a non-profit health research and innovation institute that worked with the large integrated Lovelace Health System in the mid-1990s to establish and evaluate its groundbreaking Episodes of Care® (EOC) disease management program. In this EOC initiative, Dr. Gunter’s team and Lovelace achieved significant care and cost improvements in 18 conditions and provided national and international training to many health professionals to share their successful model for integrating evidence-based medicine into practice, thus improving care, costs, and outcomes. This pioneering work and its dissemination have provided the foundation for other nationally recognized programs, including Project ECHO.
