The 1st IASTED International Conference on Unconventional Oils and the Environment (ENV 2011) will will be a major forum for international researchers and practitioners interested in all areas of unconventional oils, including oil and tar sands, oil shales, heavy oils, and other hydrocarbons that do not flow. It will be an opportunity to present and observe the latest research, results, and ideas in these areas. Today, environmental groups are increasingly asserting their concerns regarding unconventional oil development. As governments remain relatively hostile to these groups’ demands, environmentalists find themselves largely removed from the formal political sphere in this arena. This is the situation in Canada as well as in other countries around the world where heavy oil, oil shales, and oil sands are located. As the reserves of easy-to-produce oil become depleted, the challenges facing unconventional oil production and the need for economical remediation and environmental protection are becoming more and more significant.
