District heating and cooling systems (DHC) are a proven energy
solution that has been deployed for many years in a growing number of
urban areas worldwide. They comprise a variety of technologies that
seek to develop synergies between the production and supply of
heating, cooling, domestic hot water and electricity. Although the
benefits of DHC systems are significant and have been widely
acclaimed, yet the full potential of modern DHC systems remains
largely untapped. DHC systems, both large and small scale, need to be
more efficient, intelligent and cheaper. The development and
deployment of intelligent systems using smart metering, increased use
of sensors & actuators as Internet-of-Things (IoT), and exploiting
multiple energy resources are the enabling factors for future DHC
systems. The inclusion of waste heat recovery, heat pumps, thermal
storage, cogeneration and renewable energy integration, and to
roll-out solutions for the integration of intelligent thermal network
with smart electricity grids and data centers, are opportunities to
increase the overall efficiency.
Relevant topics for the workshop include, but are not limited to the following:
? Monitoring and control solutions in DHC
? Optimization of DHC systems
? Energy and resource efficiency
? Intelligent systems in DHC systems
? Modelling of DHC system, including production units, distribution networks
? Data modelling and management for large scale DHC
? Consumer behavioral modelling
? Economic modelling
? Automated DR algorithms and schemes
? Consumer engagement and incentive
? New business models
? Integration with Smart grids and renewable energy sources
? Intelligent thermal management of buildings
? Use of distributed energy resources (DERs) to offset building
thermal loads
The workshop organizers encourage contribution of papers that
summarize new research results but also technical papers that describe
new innovations and achievements in technical solutions for thermal
management of buildings and optimization of DHC systems. The best
papers will get an opportunity to present their work as “lightning
talks” in the ACM eEnergy main conference.
