The Department of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Limerick, Ireland is pleased to announce the 2nd European Transcultural Nursing Association conference, from the 30th June to 1st July 2011. This is the 2nd in a series of International conferences, convened by the European Transcultural Nursing Association (ETNA). The title of this conference is ‘Let’s learn together, let’s work together: Challenges and solutions for Transcultural health and social care”. This conference invites all health and social care professionals with an interest in the area of transcultural health and social care practice, policy, education and research. The themes of the conference are:

Transcultural care and multidisciplinary teams
Globalisation, European mobility and transcultural care
Innovations in cultural competence in health and social care practice
Innovative methods which promote intercultural education

Transcultural health and social care is a particularly important topic and an area of much interest when we consider the effects of globalisation worldwide. The World Migration Report, (2005) highlights that global migration brings with it a wide range of both benefits and challenges for sending and receiving countries (International Organization for Migration, 2005). Ireland is in an ideal place to host such a conference as it has seen a relatively new phenomena emerge where soaring rates of emigration has been replaced with immigration. Ireland is now host to 188 different nationalities (Central Statistics Office, 2008). This rapid and unprecedented broadening of diversity in Ireland, resulting from the rich landscape of cultures and ethnicities has significantly enriched the fabric of social, economic and cultural life in Ireland. At the same time, this emerging diversity that has developed at a very rapid pace presents many challenges for Irish society and for health services to provide equitable and quality care. Despite these challenges, Irish health and social care professionals have successfully undergone considerable change in recent times and continue to respond positively to new developments.

Part of Ireland’s appeal as a conference destination is what it can offer beyond the event itself, as it provides a rich tapestry of culture and heritage. Its vibrant and captivating history is evident ubiquitously and is proudly maintained.Ireland boasts a rich and inspiring history, some incredible landscapes, authentic traditional culture and a uniquely warm welcome.

As a country renowned for its Céad Míle Fáilte, which when translated from the Irish language means a hundred thousand welcomes, we extend a warm welcome to you and invite you to join us at this exciting and what is promising to be a thought provoking conference.
