The Mass Media & Communication Unit of ATINER organizes a Stream on Mediatization, 14-17 May 2018, Athens, Greece as part of the 16th Annual International Conference on Communication and Mass Media sponsored by the Athens Journal of Mass Media and Communications.
Mediatization belongs to the most prominent theories of social change, but is also considered as a long term process with real consequences for everyday life, culture and society, forming our “mediatized worlds”. In the proposed stream, we would like to offer theoretically informed and empirically grounded discussions devoted to the mediatization process taking place on national, European and global, but also on local or regional levels. Papers reflecting the intersection of communication and media studies, including topics such as politics (policy), culture, and society viewed in a mediatization context, will be especially welcome. The general idea of this stream is to refine the understanding of the mediatization process using different conceptual contexts and empirical insights. The list of possible topics includes (but is not limited to) the following ideas: mediatization theory – conceptual studies devoted to its essence, different stages and manifestation, as well as its verification in diverse social conditions (conceptualizing mediatization); dimensions of mediatizations, e.g.: mediatization of politics; mediatization of popular culture and styles of life (transcultural and transnational perspectives); mediatization in late modernity; mediatization of religion; dynamics of mediatization processes in different geographical, political and cultural regions/environments (comparative mediatization research); technological dimension of mediatization. You may participate as presenter of one paper, chair or/and organizer of a session, or observer.
Fee structure information is available on https://www.atiner.gr/2018fees.
Special arrangements will be made with a local hotel for a limited number of rooms at a special conference rate. In addition, a number of special events will be organized: A pragmatic symposium (as organized in Ancient Athens but fine tuned to synchronous ethics), a special one-day educational island tour, a Mycanae and island of Poros visit, an Athens educational walking tour, an one-day visit to Delphi and an ancient Corinth and Cape Sounion visit. Details of the social program are available here.
