Social media platforms have emerged as attractive means of virtual communication where people have equal opportunity to grasp and contribute content to be widely shared and consumed. The result is a huge flow of data which could be captured and processed for valuable knowledge discovery to serve a variety of organizations, groups and individuals. In fact, development in technology has made available a variety of devices which facilitate more virtual communication on the go. Whether intentionally or un intentionally, anyone with a mobile device leaves a trace of his/her location, behavior, preferences, opinion, etc. Trace left and communicated information may form a valuable source from which various agencies and authorities may benefit. This is possible by utilizing appropriate social media analysis measures and techniques. Many tools have been developed to help in social media analysis. However, always there is need for new techniques and strategies to serve emerging domains and to handle new trends, especially in the dynamic and big data era. The purpose of this special session at ARS 2017 is to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in social media analysis to discuss developments in foundations and needs of various applications. Authors may submit contributions which describe developing new algorithms or using/adapting existing algorithms to serve various applicati ons.
Topics of interest include, but not limited to:
Application driven pattern recognition and modeling for counterterrorism, stock market, healthcare, etc
