Teaching research methodology is a major challenge for many academics. This is because to be a competent researcher it is necessary to not only acquire skills with the techniques to be used, but also to have an understanding of the philosophical issues which underpin research. As a result of this research methodology courses are often quite superficial with the emphasis being placed on collecting and analysing data. This is not really sufficient for the purposes of quality academic research.
Some good work is being done in this field in various parts of the world and this competition will highlight such initiatives. If you are or if you have been involved in this field of study we invite you to participate in a competition to showcase new ideas and new approaches to methodology teaching for academic research.
To enter the competition we ask you in the first instance to submit an abstract of up to 300 words describing the work you wish to draw to our attention to. If your work is suitable we will invite you to submit a case history of no more than 3000 words which will be considered as an entry to the competition. A panel of international adjudicators will evaluate the case histories.
Your full case history submission will be structured around the following headings:
Introduction to the specific objectives of the teaching initiative;
The infrastructure i.e. people, systems, exercises, or perhaps hardware, software if any;
The challenges that were encountered, how they developed and how they were overcome;
How the initiative was received by the learners;
The learning outcomes that were achieved and how they were measured and evaluated;
Plans to further develop the initiative.
The judges will consider all submissions received by the closing date and the top rated initiatives will be invited to present their case histories in June 2017 at ECRM 2017 in Dublin. Prizes will be awarded to case histories judged to show the most creative thinking with regards teaching Research Methodology. The top ten case histories will be included a book will be published carrying the case histories of all the finalists.
