In businesses, academia, education, and government settings, people increasingly must collaborate with people from other cultural or ethnic groups. Corporations have been establishing global teams that allow them to take advantage of expertise no matter where in the world it is located. Outsourcing continues to be on the rise, requiring interactions between U.S.-based members of a firm and the outsourcing locations, for instance. In education, there are many attempts to provide international experiences through distance education, satellite campuses, and educational chatrooms. And at home, people are now socializing with members of other cultures in chatrooms, bboards, social networks, and online multiplayer games.
Studies suggest that these cross-cultural and multi-lingual interactions often are problematic, due to differences in expectations, communication styles, preferences for different technologies, and many other factors. The goal of this workshop is to bring together those interested in bridging cultural differences in collaborative technologies to discuss the problems that arise in intercultural collaboration and how technology might help solve these problems.
This workshop on Culture and Collaboration Technologies will focus on how cultural and ethnic factors influence the design, use and evaluation of collaboration technologies. The goal is to bring together researchers interested in cultural issues from academic, industry, and government communities.
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
Studies of cultural differences in collaboration processes
Studies of collaboration problems in multi-cultural groups and teams
New collaborative tools or environments to support multi-cultural collaboration
New methods, techniques or technologies for studying multi-cultural collaboration
Cultural and ethnic factors in social networks and media
Cross-cultural applications design and usability
