The goal of this invite-only workshop (speakers are invited, anyone can attend), in a nutshell, is to bring together researchers from the two ends of the distributed computing spectrum?theory and systems. Over the years, given the way these two communities have evolved, we have learned to live with the facts that theoretical gems go unnoticed by systems researchers and industry practitioners, while many crisp theoretical problems in systems and networks remained unexplored by theoreticians. We feel it is critical to address this, and the time is now.
This workshop is intended to catalyze discussions between these communities, with the aim of seeding researchers from theory and systems (and industry) with new ideas for research problems, research projects, open source software, and startups.
We are inviting:
Theoreticians to talk about what folks in both industry and in systems researchers should be paying attention to, among the many theory areas, trends, and active result areas. What would transform the landscape of industry and systems research over the next 5, 10, and 25 years?
Systems researchers and industry practitioners to talk about what theoretical challenges that, if solved, would advance the state of systems (and thus theory!) research significantly over the next 5, 10, and 25 years?
Researchers who straddle both theory and systems communities to talk about how to address both questions above.
