Overview:
This unique 90 minute webinar aims to help prevent domestic violence related attacks in the workplace by focusing on effective, proactive safety strategies.
Threat assessment and management expert Lynn Fairweather uses real case studies and cutting edge research to show how domestic violence spillover occurs and how professionals can identify potentially lethal situations before they explode.
The webinar begins with several examples of recent spillover attacks, followed by statistical information on the prevalence and “common denominators” of such cases. Participants will then be introduced to key threat assessment and management concepts that can be applied to their most critical cases.
Through a series of 10 strategies, Ms. Fairweather explains the “3 R’s” that every manager must know, the essential elements of a workplace violence training policy, and how to cultivate a supportive employee culture. Featured content areas include situational analysis, program evaluation, perpetrator lethality factors, and target hardening techniques.
Attendees will leave with an enhanced knowledge of domestic violence spillover, as well as a toolbox of practical ideas on preventing workplace violence in their own facilities.
Why Should You Attend:
Statistically speaking, every large company has workplace domestic violence policy. More than half of women (and many men) have experienced physical, sexual, or severe emotional abuse during their lifetime and most of these victims are employed, as are their abusers. When both show up to their jobs, the abuse and harassment often follow, emerging as domestic violence “spillover” in the workplace. The spillover spectrum ranges from repetitive phone calls on the mild end, to mass shootings on the extreme. Of course, violent incidents are a primary
concern, but the impact of workplace bullying training reaches far beyond human safety alone. Abused employees have higher absenteeism and lower productivity rates than non-abused employees. They also have over 40% higher health care costs and a greater chance of leaving the company or being fired because of what they are experiencing at home and at work. Their abusers create a significant liability risk for
employers facing everything from OSHA violations to multimillion dollar post-incident lawsuits. If employee victims aren’t coming forward and management isn’t responding correctly, then the company is “flying blind”, unable to see the dangers before them. Employers should attend this webinar because while it is within their power to address and defeat the insidious enemy of domestic violence, they can’t do it without understanding the nature of their opponent and knowing exactly what tools to use in the battle against it.
Areas Covered in this Webinar:
This webinar covers 10 proactive strategies for preventing domestic violence spillover in the workplace.
Beginning with statistics on the prevalence of primary and secondary victimization, facilitator Lynn Fairweather will guide participants through a collection of real life cases, with a focus on the common denominators between them. From there, attendees will discover the first strategy, learning how to shift their security approach from reactive to proactive defense. Within this unit they will explore key threat assessment and management concepts such as “The Kindling and the Spark”, “The Path to Intended Violence” and “The Dangerous Dog”. Next, attention turns to the second strategy, where Ms. Fairweather will explain how to establish a strong company stance against domestic violence, supported by clear and comprehensive policy. In the third strategy, participants will learn about creating an employee protection culture that encourages disclosure and trust between employees and management. This is followed by a discussion on internal training, and the importance of mastering the “3 R’s” of domestic violence response (Recognize, Respond, and Refer). The fifth strategy is in regard to the establishment and training of threat assessment teams, and features six reasons why domestic violence threat is different from other types of workplace risk.
Ms. Fairweather continues by explaining how to identify high lethality risk factors in a case and reveals six types of fatal outcome. She also offers suggestions for several “situational analysis” questions that may help to determine where an abuser is at in their violence risk trajectory. In the seventh strategy, participants will review a sample menu of target hardening measures. Afterward, the eighth unit covers how to prepare staff to respond to an onsite attack. Finally, the conversation turns to case monitoring, and lastly to process evaluation with the goal of learning from past mistakes and successes. The webinar concludes with an offering of additional domestic violence resources.
