CHARISMA 2016 - Workshop on 5G strengthening business and social development: barriers and drivers

The exponential growth of demand on wireless data rates, new requirements posed by future services and vertical industries as well as the increased level heterogeneity has led to Internet transformation. A transformation is also observed in the market where traditional players such as network / access providers sidelined by content providers. On the other hand, industrial and societal challenges such as populations ageing and automation of industrial processes should be addressed.
5G networking along with new technologies and advanced techniques (edge caching, network function virtualization and software defined networks) is assumed as a means to accommodate the extremely rapid changes and increased requirements.In this new environment, several security concerns have been arisen while a gap in regulation has been revealed. End-to-end security across all layers of the network should be addressed in all 5G network implementations from the very beginning. Security of the network will depend heavily on the proper management and manipulation of NFV and SDN technologies.
The reason for the workshop is to show case the work of CHARISMA project and discuss business and regulatory issues of 5G networking. The workshop also hopes to bring together other 5G projects as well as other interested parties which have a common interest in the development and progression of the identified topics.
Contributions from other 5G projects or the research community acting in this area are also welcome.
The workshop is organised under the CHARISMA Horizon 2020 project (Grant agreement No: 671704). The effort thus is expected to be around its thematic context. CHARISMA proposes an intelligent hierarchical routing and paravirtualised architecture that unites two important concepts: devolved offload with shortest path nearest to end-users and an end-to-end security service chain via virtualized open access physical layer security (PLS). The CHARISMA architecture meets the goals of low-latency (<1ms) and security required for future converged wireless/wireline advanced 5G networking. This provides a cloud infrastructure platform with increased spectral and energy efficiency and enhanced performance targeting the identified needs for 1000-fold increased mobile data volume, 10-100 times higher data rates, 10-100 times more connected devices and 5x reduced latency. The CHARISMA approach will benefit user experiences with ground-breaking low-latency services, high-bandwidth, and mobile cloud resilient network security.
The workshop has been endorsed by the IEEE 5G Mobile Wireless Internet Emerging Technologies Subcommittee (IEEE 5G TsC).
