Celebration of the "50th anniversary of the Laser" last year has brought the attention on how much laser light and photonics have changed and can further improve the quality of life. Photonics is one of the key enabling technologies, essential to face the "grand challenges" of our time. Indeed it can address and have a strong impact in many application fields such as ICT, healthcare, energy saving and efficiency, security, environmental monitoring, etc. The conference aims to bring scientists from all over the world to meet the Mediterranean Photonics community. The highlights of photonics will be presented and its role for a sustainable development will be discussed. Basic aspects related to advanced materials and technologies (organic materials, photonic crystals, metamaterials, nanoplasmonics, etc.) together with innovative optical components, devices and systems will show the future ahead of us. Students and young researchers will be given space to present their activity and to take the chance of discussing them with senior scientists.
This topical meeting is organised in cooperation with the Tunisian Optical Society (Sociétè Tunisienne D'Optique) and follows the XII. Education and Training in Optics and Photonics Conference (ETOP 2011).

Venue
Tunis is the capital of Tunisia and links three different cities: the historical heart Medina, the “European” centre that was built up at the beginning of the 20th century and the new quarters all around that are continuously growing and conferring the modern spirit to the metropolis. The city is seen as an excellent venue for the 1st EOS Topical Meeting on Photonics for Sustainable Development - Focus on the Mediterranean (PSDM 2011) to co-locate the researchers' communities on Photonics from Europe and the Mediterranean countries.
The meeting will be held at the Ramada Plaza Tunis, that is ideally located near the beach of the Côte de Carthage and approx. 20 km away from downtown Tunis.
Situated at a beautiful site, the Ramada Plaza Tunis offers a variety of leisure and wellness activities, well equipped with an indoor and outdoor pool, a Hammam, sauna and fitness centre. The historic city of Carthage can be visited as well as the as the pretty small village Sidi Bou Said that are both located nearby.
Travel and Accomodation
The venue can easily be reached by car or by taxi from Tunis-Carthage International Airport in 30 minutes, located 20 km away from downtown Tunis. From the airport, you can transfer to the city by bus or by taxi, both facilities are available outside of the arrival area. We recommend you to go by taxi since travelling by public transport in Tunisia might be quite difficult. Yellow cabs in Tunis operate on a metered fare system and are relatively inexpensive (~10 ? à 20 km).
Rooms at a special rate have been blocked at the venue hotel. The booking details and a list of alternative hotels will be published soon.
