PerWare 2011 - Workshop on Middleware and System Support for Pervasive Computing (PerWare 2011)

Designing systems to support pervasive computing poses many challenges. Issues such as mobility, disconnection, dynamic introduction and removal of devices, and merging of the physical environment with the computational infrastructure are common and affect the underlying system infrastructure. Furthermore, different devices might be connected to different networks, with different latency and bandwidth. As a result, the system software must provide mechanisms for handling disconnection, addressing fault tolerance, and adapting to a number of issues related to diversity including heterogeneous device resources. The scale of pervasive computing in terms of the number of devices and services, combined with the lack of a single system administrator, the associated dynamism, and frequent failures requires system services capable of evolving and re-organizing themselves.

The goal of PERWARE is to explore these challenges through practical and buildable solutions for system development, deployment, configuration, scaling, and maintenance. As in previous years we aim to gather the principal practitioners and their experiences under one roof to discuss their findings, incite collaboration and move the state of the art forward.

PERWARE solicits position papers that focus on system building in pervasive computing, including, but not limited to, the following topics:

Platforms for pervasive computing
Operating system and distributed systems support for pervasive computing
Software engineering techniques for pervasive computing (including design patterns, metrics, and application models)
Adaptable, recoverable, and fault tolerant pervasive computing systems
Security and privacy of pervasive computing
Management, configuration, and deployment of pervasive systems
We also welcome papers on novel applications or environments that have a strong systems component, especially if those novel applications and environments challenge existing ideas and design techniques.
Submission
Submissions of papers are solicited in the IEEE 8.5x11 conference format and must not exceed six pages. Research papers must be original prior unpublished work and not under review elsewhere. All submissions will be peer-reviewed and selected based on their originality, merit, and relevance to the workshop.

Paper submissions will be handled online (link to come). Note that one week prior to submission, papers must be registered with their title, authors and abstract.

Accepted papers must be presented at the workshop, and will appear in the IEEE PerCom workshop proceedings and the IEEE Digital Library. At least one author must have a full registration for the conference (there is no workshop only registration) and present the paper. Failure to do so will result in the paper not being included in the IEEE Digital Library.
