IHDP 2011 - 2011 International Conference on "Industrial Transformation, Urbanization, and Human Security in the Asia Pacific"
Topics/Call fo Papers
The IHDP National Committee: The Academy of Sciences located in Taipei will host the conference of “Industrial Transformation, Urbanization, and Human Security in the Asia-Pacific” in January of 2011 at Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan. Asia has been undergoing unprecedented economic growth and industrial transformation during the past few decades. Much of this growth is occurring in coastal regions, areas at high risk from changing land use, climate change, and the loss of ecosystem services. The ever increasing extreme climate events have threatened the life and properties of human beings. This conference will provide an opportunity to bring together scholars, decision makers, and practitioners to discuss on several human dimensions issues in Asia-Pacific related to global environmental change. Topics to be addressed in the conference include:
1. Industrializing, Urbanizing and Regional Development
2. Ecosystem Services and Vulnerability of Coastal Cities
3. Human Vulnerability and Security in a High Risk World
Forum (Jan. 14~15, 2011)
The event is organized into a one and a half day conference (14-15 January 2011). The conference will invite Nobel Laureate, Dr. Yuan-Tseh Lee, President-Elect of ICSU (International Council for Science), to deliver the keynote speech. There also will be three plenary speeches from the IHDP core projects of Industrial Transformation (IT), Urbanization and Global Environmental Change (UGEC), and Global Environmental Change and Human Security (GECHS). Three parallel sessions will be arranged for IT, UGEC, and GECHS. The conference will create a forum for the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and strategies to help the Asia-Pacific address the challenge of global environmental change in the 21st century.
Field trip and Workshop (Jan. 16~17, 2011)
A post-conference two day-one night field trip is arranged to visit the development and environmental change along the western coastal plain of Taiwan. During the field trip, a half-day workshop will divide experts into three groups, according to the three topics of the conference, and will review the current issues and findings regarding industrial transformation, urbanization, and human security respectively. Discussions will emphasize on future challenge and strategies for the Asia-Pacific. The workshop will also improve networking and initiate collaboration in Asia-Pacific countries. Proposals from each group will be presented at the end of the half-day workshop to conclude the conference.
