The Social Sciences Division (SSD) of ATINER will hold a Stream on “Forced Migration and Flight into Europe. Developments and Challenges” as part of the 5th Annual International Conference on Social Sciences, 30-31 July & 1-2 August 2018, Athens, Greece. In the past, the five units of SSD have organized more than 60 annual international conferences on economics, sociology psychology, politics & international affairs, the mass media & communication, anthropology, as well as population & demography.
The aim of the stream is firstly to analyse recent societal developments regarding the handling of flight and forced migration. In doing so, a focus will be on the societal conflicts that emanated in Europe’s countries in reaction to the so-called refugee crisis. Of special interest are the reactions of governments, political parties and of the dominant media towards nationalistic and racist defensive attitudes as well as towards solidary groups within civil society.
Secondly, the role of social sciences in these conflicts will be discussed: What significance does social sciences research about flight and forced migration have in European countries? Is a critical position regarding a policy that is directed towards the control of refugees and forced migrants capable of consensus within social sciences? How much influence might our analyses have upon the political and media discourse in each of the national contexts? What could be possibilities and conditions for a European network of research on flight and forced migration?
You may participate as presenter of one paper, chair or/and organizer of a session, or observer.
Fee structure information is available on www.atiner.gr/2018fees.
Special arrangements will be made with a local hotel for a limited number of rooms at a special conference rate. In addition, a number of special events will be organized: A pragmatic symposium (as organized in Ancient Athens but fine tuned to synchronous ethics), a special one-day educational island tour, a Mycanae and island of Poros visit, an Athens educational walking tour, an one-day visit to Delphi and an ancient Corinth and Cape Sounion visit. Details of the social program are available here.
Please submit an abstract (email only) to: atiner-AT-atiner.gr, using the abstract submission form by the 2 April 2018 to: Dr. Albert Scherr, Professor & Head, Institute of Sociology, University of Education-Freiburg, Germany.

Papanikos, President, ATINER & Honorary Professor, University of Stirling, UK (gregory.papanikos-AT-stir.ac.uk).
The association was established in 1995 as an independent world association of Academics and Researchers. Its mission is to act as a forum where Academics and Researchers from all over the world can meet in Athens, in order to exchange ideas on their research, and to discuss future developments in their disciplines.
The organizing and hosting of International Conferences and Symposiums, the carrying out of Research, and the production of Publications are the basic activities of ATINER.
