E-MIMO 2015 - First International Workshop on Emerging MIMO Technology in Large-Scale Active Antenna System (E-MIMO 2015)
Topics/Call fo Papers
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) has been a pivotal component in achieving high spectral efficiency in commercial wireless systems (e.g. LTE, WiFi, WiMAX). Traditional MIMO system typically has a small number of passive antenna elements that perform beam steering in the horizontal domain. With recent progress in active antenna system (AAS), massive MIMO with a very large number of independently-controllable active antenna elements has attracted much research interest in both academia and industry recently. Often configured as a 2D planar array, massive MIMO system is able to flexibly adjust the beam waveform and steering angles in the vertical domain in addition to the horizontal domain, thereby drastically improving system performance through advanced multiuser multiplexing, adaptive cell shaping, interference avoidance and higher-order MIMO. In millimeter wave spectrum, massive MIMO system is expected to be even more promising due to the reduced wavelength and antenna array size requirement. It is generally acknowledged that massive MIMO will be an essential technology for satisfying the spectral efficiency requirement of future 5G communication systems.
The benefits of massive MIMO, however, come at the cost of increased system design challenges including pilot design, channel quantization and feedback, advanced beamforming, and various implementation aspects. To address these challenges, the goal of this workshop is to bring together leading researchers in both academia and industry to share their views on these issues, discuss recent progress in both theoretical and implementation aspects, and identify promising concepts and technologies that enables successful rollout of massive MIMO as a path toward future 5G society.
