The ever-increasing requirements and popularity of mobile applications for both business and entertainment purposes signify the need for more efficient mobile computing architectures. Maintaining end-to-end quality of service on mobile devices is a challenging task due to the limitations imposed by user mobility, the wireless medium, access technologies (4G, WiFi), and the back-end mechanisms that support the carrier applications.
In this emerging market of mobile computing, some operations can be outsourced to remote servers, since mobile devices are of limited processing capabilities and tight energy budget. In addition to the traditional approach of partitioning and offloading applications to clouds, recent mobile cloud computing (MCC) paradigms suggest that users could exchange their processing, storage, and network resources on demand, that is, to exploit the opportunistically available resources in their neighborhood.
Leveraging cloud-based resources to augment mobile devices introduces significant challenges lying in the high dynamism of the system, particularly the continual arrival of diverse tasks, and the time-varying connectivity and bandwidth of access links among mobile devices and to the cloud. Moreover, the unpredictable availability of server processing resources (due to complex interaction of coexisting processes on the same physical machine) and also the mobility of end-user devices intensify the challenges.
The purpose of this special issue is to publish high-quality research papers as well as review articles addressing recent advances on MCC, with particular emphasis on novel applications and architectures. Original, high-quality contributions that are not yet published or not currently under consideration by other journals or peer-reviewed conferences are sought.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
Novel architectures for cloud-based mobile applications and services (e.g., ad hoc, collaborative, cloudlets)
Energy efficiency in cloud-based mobile information systems and enterprise applications
Computation and storage offloading in MCC
Mobility-aware resource management and VM migrations in MCC
Management and provisioning of mobile data storage
Context-aware resource provisioning in MCC
MCC middleware for heterogenous technologies
Crowdsensing (mobile sensing) and crowdsourcing in MCC
Modeling and performance evaluation of MCC architectures
Workload characterization in MCC scenarios
Pricing, SLAs, and billing of MCC applications and services
