CALL FOR PAPERS
The information and communication challenges being put over the existing networking fabric of today’s Internet by the myriad of online services and mobile applications have manifested the technical inadequacies and complexities of its base architecture. This has fomented research in novel network architectures, spearheaded by the Information Centric Networking (ICN) concept, where communications are driven by content names, and the support of enhanced mechanisms that changes the way security and mobility is realized. Notwithstanding its contributions and suitability towards better support for enhanced content reachability, it still faces enormous challenges in regards its deployment capability and adoption by operators and manufacturers. As such, in order to fully acknowledge ICN as a full-fledged Internet solution, it is paramount to assess and evaluate its contribution and impact in different utilization scenarios and environments. This is further exacerbated by upcoming 5G networking architectures, whose ongoing research is targeting the networking mechanisms of tomorrow in regards to the explosion in number of connected devices, bandwidth increase, reduced latency, enhanced resilience, and the deployment of supporting operational mechanisms such as network virtualization, cloud-based deployments, mobile-edge computing, and storage and new utilization scenarios.
This special issue targets contributions on the aforementioned aspects, exploring the potential of information-centric approaches, as well as their evolution for the enablement of service, control, and data plane operations, in the future 5G networking architecture. We invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that will stimulate the continuing efforts in assessing ICN not only as a powerful technology in its own right, but also as the means to provide, manage, operate, and stimulate a future Internet.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
? Use cases for practical deployment and/or IP interoperation
? Experimental and/or large-scale evaluations of ICN solutions
? New scenarios for ICN: smart environments, network management, social networking, real-time communications, Internet of Things (IoT), and beyond
? Enabling existing IP-based services
? Solutions for addressing the 5G challenges (latency, explosion of users, greater bandwidth, and so forth)
? Solutions for integrating ICN with supportive technologies for 5G (e.g., SDN and NFV)
? Resource sharing (communications, computing, and storage) in ICN architectures
? Information-centric solutions for mobile and wireless networking
Authors can submit their manuscripts via the Manuscript Tracking System at http://mts.hindawi.com/submit/journals/misy/icnt/.
